CheckMe!TM program, has worked for decades as a consumer advocate, broadcaster, engineer and teacher to improve the energy efficiency of the American household. A 1965 graduate of MIT, Proctor started four non-profit consumer Associations in Colorado, including the well-known Sun Power Consumer Association, which provided customers with accurate information about the actual capabilities of solar power systems.

In the 1980s, Proctor brought his expertise to a mass audience, hosting an Emmy award winning PBS program, "Who's Taking the Heat," a consumer oriented home energy efficiency series. He has also served as an expert for Consumer Reports.

In 1989, Proctor founded Proctor Engineering Group to focus on methods of improving existing energy equipment, such as air conditioners. The company based in San Rafael, California, has performed studies of residential air conditioners in more than 15 states. As a result of those studies, Proctor Engineering has developed software that helps air conditioning technicians greatly improve the efficiency of central air conditioners by giving them an accurate guide to optimal refrigerant charge and airflow over a unit's inside coil . Today that program is used statewide in Massachusetts, Nevada and in California.

John Proctor has won numerous awards for his work as an engineer, including the 1994 Technical Merit Award from the Energy Efficient Building Association. In addition, he serves on several nationwide engineering standards committees including ventilation for indoor air quality.

In 1990, Proctor Engineering undertook a study for PG&E of residential air conditioners in the Fresno area. The study and its findings eventually led to the first-of-its-kind CheckMe!TM program. CheckMe!TM gives air conditioner owners an expert engineering analysis of their system. The program was successfully field tested in the Fresno area during the 1998 summer months.
